Privateer teams ran rear-wheel-drive 325is in rallying too, relying on the car’s beautifully balanced chassis and torquey straight-six to dance through the stages. It might not have had the turbo grunt of its AWD rivals, but in the right hands, it was a weapon.
What really makes the E30 special is how it blends raw, analogue driving with an everyday usability that few performance cars of its era could match. It wasn’t just a racer’s car, it was a car for everyone. Even today, the E30 remains a favourite among enthusiasts and collectors. The M3 has become a six-figure legend, but even the standard 325i still commands respect as one of the most engaging driver’s cars ever built.
