At Race Plastics, we pride ourselves on being able to replace those vital bits of performance plastic that make up your vehicle. Now that includes your number plate! We are a DVLA authorised supplier of UK number plates, which are manufactured in line with British Standard BS AU 145e. What does that mean? It means unless the owner of the vehicle wants a £1,000 fine, the government requires the following from your number plate:

  • The plates must be manufactured out of impact tested materials;
  • Approved reflective backgrounds to the plates;
  • Single black colour letters and numbers, in the approved font;
  • Registered seller's name, postcode and British Standard stamp.

Our plates happily meet these requirements. Please note that we legally need to get proof of ID (for example your driving licence) and proof that you are in possession of the vehicle (for example the V5C).

Number Plate Additions

There are a number of variations to number plates that are legally allowed:

  • Vehicle specific shaped plates eg. Rover 75
  • Square and oblong plates
  • Country flags and symbols

We can do all these, but please contact us to discuss what you need - the legislation has recently changed, so what you need may have also.

Installation

All our number plates are supplied with adhesive pads which quickly and neatly attach the plate to your vehicle, and will hold securely (this is the DVLA's recommended form of attachment - no, they don't like those cleverly positioned black screw caps!).

Historic Number Plates

We can also produce vintage/historic style pressed aluminium plates for vehicles that are authorised to use them: find our more here.

4D and Gel Number Plates

These popular options are a bit of a grey area - they seem to be viewed as legal currently, although some people have reported being fined or having an MOT fail on the back of them. As per the beginning of 2026 the government has made noises about bringing in legislation later in the year to formally ban this type of plate. Whilst we might feel that a government might have more pressing things to do with its time, we are not comfortable supplying customers with a product that might earn them a £1,000 fine in the near future! As such, we ARE able to offer this type of plate, but want you to be forewarned. Contact us for more information.
