Enhance your polycarbonate windows with a sleek black border

The Black Primer for Window Borders from RacePlastics is your go-to solution for creating or repairing the sleek, retro-style black borders on your polycarbonate windows. Whether you're installing new polycarbonate windows or refreshing an existing set, this black primer offers a professional-grade finish that adheres seamlessly to the material.

What is a black window primer?

A Black Window Primer is a specialised coating designed to create the black obscuration border commonly seen around polycarbonate windows. This border isn't just cosmetic, it helps to block out UV rays and improves the overall appearance of the window by covering adhesive edges, ensuring a clean, polished look.

How does black window primer work?

This primer is formulated to bond specifically with polycarbonate surfaces. When applied, it forms a thick, durable layer that adheres to the polycarbonate window’s edge, mimicking the smooth black borders seen on racing car windows. This enhances the aesthetics while also offering additional protection to the window's edge from environmental elements and wear.

Do I need to use black window primer?

If you're working with polycarbonate windows for motorsport or any high-performance application, using a black primer is essential. Not only does it give the window a finished, professional look, but it also ensures that the edges are protected and adhesive bonds are hidden, which can significantly enhance both the durability and appearance of the window.

How do you apply black window primer?

Applying Black Window Primer is a straightforward process that delivers impressive results:

  1. Measure and Prepare: First, measure the black border you want to replicate; usually 30-40mm wide. Clean the window edge with an alcohol wipe to ensure it's free from dirt and oils.
  2. Mask the Area: Use masking tape on the inside of the window to define the area you want to paint.
  3. Apply the Primer: Open the primer carefully. Using cotton buds or a felt brush, apply the primer from the edge of the window to the masked area. Apply a second coat after five minutes for a solid, even finish.
  4. Final Touches: After 30 minutes, carefully remove the masking tape, revealing a crisp black border from the outside.

Remember, this primer is solvent-based and needs careful handling. Spills can be cleaned up with brake cleaner, but it’s best to work slowly to avoid messes.

Ideal for motorsport applications

RacePlastics' polycarbonate windows, including those using this black primer, are handmade to order in the UK. They comply with Motorsport UK regulations and are available in 4mm and FIA-compliant 5mm polycarbonate. While bronzed front windows are designed for track use only and are not road legal, these primer-coated borders add an extra layer of durability and professionalism to any setup.
