The BMW 3 Series has a distinguished history in motorsport, particularly in touring car racing, where it has earned a reputation for performance, precision, and success. The 3 Series, launched in 1975, quickly became one of BMW's most popular and versatile models, with various versions achieving significant accomplishments on the racetrack. Among these, the BMW E30 M3 coupe stands out as an icon in the racing enthusiast scene.

The BMW E30 M3, introduced in 1986, was developed specifically for homologation purposes to compete in Group A touring car racing. It featured a high-revving 2.3-liter inline-four engine, producing around 200 horsepower in its road-going version, and was equipped with a lightweight and aerodynamic body. The M3's exceptional handling, balance, and performance made it a formidable competitor on the track.

The E30 M3 achieved remarkable success in various touring car championships. It dominated the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), winning multiple titles from 1987 to 1992. The car also saw success in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM), securing the championship in 1987 with driver Eric van de Poele. The M3's achievements were not limited to Europe; it also won the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 1987 and numerous national championships worldwide.

One of the most memorable victories for the E30 M3 was the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, where it showcased its durability and performance by winning multiple times. The car's success was a testament to BMW's engineering prowess and commitment to motorsport excellence.

Following the E30, subsequent generations of the BMW 3 Series continued to build on its racing heritage. The E36 3 Series, introduced in the early 1990s, saw significant success in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) with the BMW 318is and 320i models. The E46 3 Series, particularly the M3 GTR, continued the legacy by dominating the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and winning the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in the early 2000s.

The E90/E92/E93 3 Series, particularly the M3, also achieved notable success in various racing series, including the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and the American Le Mans Series. The E92 M3 GT2 was particularly successful, securing numerous victories and showcasing BMW's continued commitment to motorsport.

In recent years, the F30/F31/F34 3 Series has continued to participate in touring car racing, with the 320 TC model competing in the WTCC and the 330i model participating in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). The latest G20 3 Series is also being prepared for competition, ensuring that the 3 Series' racing legacy continues.

Throughout its history, the BMW 3 Series, and particularly the E30 M3, has left an indelible mark on the racing world. Its combination of performance, engineering excellence, and competitive success has made it a favourite among racing enthusiasts and a symbol of BMW's motorsport heritage. The E30 M3 coupe, in particular, remains one of the most iconic and celebrated racing cars, embodying the spirit and passion of BMW's commitment to motorsport.
