MG Rally Cars
MG has a rich history in motorsport, and while the brand is best known for its stylish roadsters, its rallying pedigree is equally impressive. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, MG cars proved their worth on rally stages across the world, competing in prestigious events such as the Monte Carlo Rally, the RAC Rally, and various endurance rallies. Among the standout MG models that made an impact in rallying were the MGB GT, MGB Roadster, MGC, and MG Midget, each bringing a unique set of qualities to the demanding world of rally competition.
The MGB Roadster, introduced in 1962, quickly became a popular choice for rallying thanks to its lightweight monocoque construction, responsive handling, and reliable 1.8L B-Series engine. It proved to be a versatile competitor, capable of handling both tarmac and rougher terrain with ease. The open-top design provided drivers with excellent visibility, but for endurance events where protection from the elements was crucial, its hardtop counterpart, the MGB GT, became the preferred choice. The MGB GT, with its enclosed cabin and more aerodynamic profile, offered greater stability at high speeds and better durability, making it an excellent contender in long-distance endurance rallies.
One of the MGB GT’s most famous outings was in the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon, a grueling 10,000-mile rally that tested the limits of both car and driver. Competing against larger and more powerful vehicles, the MGB GT’s reliability and balanced performance allowed it to hold its own across treacherous landscapes. Two years later, it featured in the London-Mexico World Cup Rally, another endurance event that further solidified the MGB GT’s reputation as a durable and capable rally car. Though MG was never as heavily involved in factory-backed rally programs as some manufacturers, these international events proved that their cars were more than just stylish roadsters—they had the endurance and toughness required for serious rallying.
The MGC, introduced in 1967, was an evolution of the MGB but featured a significantly larger 2.9L straight-six engine. Though initially criticized for its heavier front-end handling characteristics, the MGC found its place in rallying, particularly in long-distance endurance events where its additional power proved to be an advantage. Like the MGB GT, the MGC participated in grueling rallies such as the London-Sydney Marathon, proving that, despite its added weight, it had the durability and strength to compete in the toughest conditions.
Smaller but just as determined, the MG Midget earned a reputation as an agile and fun rally car. Weighing considerably less than its larger siblings, the Midget was a natural fit for tight, technical rally stages where precise handling was essential. It became a favorite among privateer rally drivers competing in club-level and national events, where its affordability and simplicity made it an appealing choice. Though it lacked the brute force of larger rally machines, the Midget’s ability to navigate challenging terrain with ease meant it was often competitive in its class. Many of these cars found success in British and European rally circuits, competing in autocross, hill climbs, and classic rally events.
MG’s rallying history, while not as mainstream as some of its competitors, has left a lasting legacy in motorsport. From the endurance challenges tackled by the MGB GT and MGC to the nimble and spirited performances of the Midget, MG cars have played an important role in rally history. Whether battling against high-powered machines in international competitions or taking on grassroots events, these rally cars proved that MG was not just about open-top cruising but could take on the toughest conditions in motorsport. Today, classic MG rally cars continue to be cherished by enthusiasts, with many still competing in historic rally events, keeping the brand’s motorsport spirit alive.
